A new 44m x 30.5m wintering barn in Greymouth is taking shape for Kaitiaki Lands, built to house and feed a 250-cow herd through the wet West Coast season.
The job: winter cows on farm for 10+ weeks, feed alongside the milking shed year-round, and protect pasture from wet-weather damage.
Full flood wash system, Siesta rubber mats on the loafing pad, NuSpan timber roof, centre feed lane. Roof on. Loafing pad concreted. Apron, driveway and ridgecap next. Build progress: 65%.

Here’s a look at the build progress:
Why Siesta mats and a flood wash system
Siesta rubber mats give the herd a dry, soft, warm surface to lie on through winter. Less stress on joints. Calmer stock. Better recovery between milkings.
The flood wash system clears the barn fast with 60,000L of greenwash storage doing the work. Water gets reused, cleaning time drops, and effluent management stays on top of compliance without extra labour.
NuSpan timber. Strength without the weight, sustainable NZ timber, built to handle West Coast weather.
Where to from here
When this barn is finished, Kaitiaki Lands will have wintering and feeding for 250 cows under one roof, a full flood wash system running off greenwash, and pasture protected through the wettest months of the year.
Infrastructure built to last decades, sorted before next winter.
Top apron, driveway and ridgecap are next, then final fit-out.
